Portugal's Portimao circuit inching closer to F1 return

Portimão was introduced to the F1 calendar back in 2020 when Portugal was unaffected enough from covid to be able to host a round of motorsport. Since then, it was only on the calendar for 1 more year in 2021 until the F1 calendar returned to the original schedule.

Other tracks like Mugello Italy, Eiffel Germany, Istanbul Park Turkey, Sakhir Bahrain outer circuit and a second race in Austria (also known as the Styrian Grand Prix) and the 70th anniversary second race in Silverstone England has been removed from the calendar in 2020 and in Turkey's case 2021.

Portimão is now eyeing a return to F1 for 2027 with a number of circuits contracts expiring at the end of 2025 with already Zandvoort Netherlands already being confirmed to disappear of the F1 calendar after 2026, Imola Italy already gone for 2026 and Spa Francorchamps Belgium going on a rotational basis in 2028 and 2030 where the legendary track will not appear.

The Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro made a recent announcement saying Portimão is "ready for a return in 2026" but with the calendar already confirmed Portugal may make a return in 2027 if the correct funds are there, a clear spot for it on the calendar and it has to be an A rated circuit deemed by the sports Governing body - The FIA.
