Azerbaijan Grand Prix Practice 2 Round-up
Practice 2 left of where Practice 1 finished off with still lots of time left on the table for all teams going into the afternoon where we would see a lot more mistake and overshooting corners this session as the drivers tried to constantly find the limit more and more of their machine on the track.
Liam Lawson was the first victim of the day, going down the escape road at turn 16 and at the same time, Hamilton double locking up his tyres and straight on at turn 7. Bearman also found himself down the escape road at turn 8 just before the castle section, not once but twice in FP2. Leclerc clipped the wall at turn 3 and 4 on the same lap as he was pushing hard early on, Ferrari looking competitive.
Albon was the first driver to take on the hard tyre, struggling for traction over the raised curb of turn 17 and Stroll just brushing the tech-pro wall of turn 16 - something that became very familiar throughout both sessions as Colapinto and Piastri did the same thing too and Piastri having a major lock up at turn 2, getting very lucky to keep it out of the wall.
Lando Norris and McLarens day got even worse from the engine issue from Piastri from the morning, with the Brit crunching the wall out of turn 4, breaking the suspension on the left rear and had to crawl back to the pits with his steering angle ajar from being central. This bought an end to his session, not a good overall day for the team from Woking.
Mercedes had a rather confusing day with Russell looking quick at times throughout the day and Antonelli just trying to get his eye in through the tight and twisty nature of the Baku City circuit. Russell was unwell on Thursday and today majorly struggled for traction out of the castle section on a second soft tyre push lap, getting all out of shape.
Leclerc was a final victim of the day, locking up at turn 4 and doing a 360 to get back on track. Carlos Sainz very unusually banged the outside wall of the entry in turn 16 but no damage done in the dying moments of the session.
Ferrari were the team to beat at the end of FP2, P1 and P2 with Hamilton leading the way for the Scuderia with a 1.41.293, Leclerc just 0.074 back. Mercedes actually ended the day in an impressive P3 and P4 but half a second off but only separated by 0.009, Russell leading Antonelli. Ollie Bearman and Esteban Ocon with impressive P5 and P8 for the Haas team, Verstappen a bit quieter in P6 but race pace looking solid.
McLaren P10 and p12, a rough day for them and Alpine, Sauber and Aston Martin with work to do overnight.
