No progression over contract for George Russell and Mercedes

It has been recently reported that there is no progress over the renewal of George Russell from Mercedes, despite the podium last time out in Azerbaijan and the numerous before that too including a dominant weekend in Canada.

Previous information has signified that the length of the contract is the main issue for Russell. He may want a multi year contract but Mercedes CEO, Toto Wolff may only be willing to present a 1 year deal due to the possibility of the availability of Max Verstappen in the coming time.

Toto Wolff has constantly expressed his interest in the 4x World Champion while also still praising his current driver so the conflict of interest here does not sit right with many. Russell has arguably been in the top 2 best drivers this season with Max and wants to stay at Mercedes so why would Toto move away from him?

Max Verstappen of course comes with a lot of benefits like always maximizing what the car can offer and 'The Max Factor' many internally have exclaimed. But Russell can do that too and will cost less for Mercedes to employ him if he wants to stay compared to going  and buying out Verstappen from his contract that is stated to last till the end of the 2028 season. Mercedes may as well want Max Verstappen for the 2027 season.
